Effective August 1, 2020, the City of Edmonton has implemented Bylaw 19408 which makes it mandatory to wear a mask or face covering in all indoor public places and public vehicles.

This applies to all publicly accessible areas of businesses or retail stores. We have been advised that the common areas of apartment buildings are considered to be accessible to the public and therefore will be governed by this Bylaw change.

There are a few exceptions:

  • Children under the age of 2 years old;
  • People with underlying medical conditions or disabilities that prevent them from safely wearing a face covering and those who cannot wear or remove one without assistance;
  • People eating or drinking in designated seating areas of public spaces that offer food or beverages;
  • Caregivers or those accompanying someone with a disability;
  • People who need to temporarily remove their face covering to provide or receive a service.
  • People engaged in water activities or physical exercise

For apartments, this means that all tenants, visitors, contractors, or delivery personnel MUST wear a mask in all common areas of the building. That includes the hallways, elevators, enclosed parkades, and any amenity rooms that are not part of the actual living units. Additionally, social distancing of maintaining a 2-meter separation between people and a maximum of 2 people in the elevator at any time, is also recommended.
